If Pres. Noynoy Aquino really wanted to heed the call of the August 26 Million People March in Luneta, he should have abolished the pork barrel system and not merely gone after those involved in the pork barrel scam.

Aquino, however, is going after those involved in the pork barrel scam in order to preserve the pork barrel system and to heighten propaganda aimed at diminishing the opposition’s chances in the 2016 elections.

The pork barrel system is a system of patronage that serves the interests of politicians, especially the big ones like Aquino, and not the interests of Filipinos. The problem with the pork barrel system lies not only in a few bad apples. The pork barrel system is corrupt by nature and should be abolished.

Instead of abolishing pork, Aquino has defended the said system.

>> The Supreme Court may have ruled that the Priority Development Assistance Fund or PDAF is unconstitutional, but Aquino has ensured that pork funds remain available to legislators. The said funds can now be accessed by legislators through “recommendations” forwarded to government agencies. Aquino now has tighter control over legislators’ pork barrel funds.

>> Aquino maintained huge pork barrel funds in the 2014 national budget. Former National Treasurer Leonor Briones warned that pork funds may have been hidden under different items in the national budget. She earlier claimed said that pork amounts to P1.3 Trillion in the proposed P2.6 Trillion 2014 national budget. Only P4 billion, amounting to what was initially proposed as allocation for PDAF was removed from the approved national budget.

>> Aquino has canceled the Disbursement Acceleration Program to try to hide from the public’s view its patently corrupt and unconstitutional character as well as irregularities in the use of DAP funds. Kabataan Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon, for example, has claimed that P6.5 billion in the P72.1 billion DAP funds was used to augment legislators’ PDAF allocations.

We are calling on the Filipino workers and people to continue our fight for the abolition of the pork barrel system and against corruption in the Aquino government, even as we continue to press for the prosecution of those involved in the pork barrel scam.
